Novak lost to Safin in three sets . . .
It's a sad day for Novak, but it may be his greatest upset yet, as his fan, we will still support Novak.
Safin, is just too great for Novak this time, but it doesn't mean that Novak is no greater than him.
Here's what happened (wimbledon.org):
11 am: In action today on the show courts: first up on Centre Court is Novak Djokovic vs Marat Safin, which looks like the match of the day at this stage; at the same time, but on Court No. 1, Ana Ivanovic takes on Nathalie Dechy. Also playing later today will be Roger Federer, Lleyton Hewitt, Serena Williams and Amelie Mauresmo.
11:45am Two posts this morning (hello Jemma and Abbey) both asking about Novak’s chances today against Marat Safin, and for the rest of the tournament. The number three seed has only played Safin once before, way back in 2005 at the Australian Open when the Russian beat him 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.
This is probably his toughest game ahead of a semi-final with Federer. Bjorn Borg rates Djokovic ahead of Federer for this year’s Championships. He probably knows more about tennis than I do, but I still wouldn’t want a semi-final with Rog then a final against Nadal. Maybe next year Novak.
1:10pm Safin and Djokovic are on court now warming up.
1:15pm Safin had three break points in the first game of the match and he blew them: Djokovic 1-0. Baltacha saved a break point on her serve then she blew it: 5-5.
1:31pm Djokovic just double faulted to hand Safin a break. He doesn’t look his usual self out there, could be a boilover.
1:36pm Djokovic breaks back straight away, I may have gotten ahead of myself.
1:52pm Safin has taken the first set, now the number three seed has his work cut out for him. John McEnroe says Safin, "seems the one who has got his game going".
1:46pm Safin is serving for the set. Wawrinka won his tiebreak 7-6 (7-5) and now has a break in the second at 4-3. Vaidisova beat Stosur 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Dellacqua beat Parmentier 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
2:33pm Tie-break in Djokovic v Safin. Dechy has three break points to level the set.
2:42pm Safin has just won the second set in a tie-break, 7-2. McEnroe is gushing about the Russian. People always say that "on his day" Safin is one of the best players in the world. Today looks like it’s one of his days.
2:47pm Safin has broken Djokovic. The Serb looks shellshocked.
3:02pm The things that happen when I’m out covering a match, eh? Ana struggling, Nole two and a break behind. I need all you Serbs to write in with some “Ajde!” (I hope I spelt that right this time).
3.07 pm: Ana mini-breaks, Nat mini-breakback mountains. The tension! It’s 2-2 there. Next door on Centre, the Djoker is three points from defeat…
3.05 pm: Ana holds – tie-break! Hopp Suisse ! Stan “the man” Wawrinka beats Del Potro in straight sets. He’s the next big thing, I tell you. Having an amazing 2008, he is. And what with the Djoker potentially out of his part of the draw… (tee hee, I know, it’s far from over yet, but he’s serving to save the match).
3.10 pm: Nole saves one with a big serve then saves the next with a big forehand. Big. Dechy goes for one which is going out and hands Ana three set points. Ooh, bad backhand from Nole – match-point again.
3.11 pm: Ana takes the set! 1-1! Nole has saved three match points… Deuce on Centre. Then he double faults! A fourth match point…
3.12 pm: Djokovic sends down a second double fault and Marat Safin has beaten him in straight sets! What a shock! Incredible! Davai Marat!
3.15 pm: The No. 3 seed is out! Incredible scenes! In straight sets as well! (Excuse all the exclamation marks but let’s be honest, they are justified!) Marat is a double Grand Slam winner (US 2000, Aus 2005) but I don’t think many people expected that. This is the first time in six Grand Slams that Nole hasn’t made the semis at least.
I guess they made it right: It was shocking!
Maybe it's not your day today my dear Novak, but I'm still here with your fans.
Goodluck for the next year.
Lovelots Novak Djokovic.
